Nigeria’s public health system is once again under pressure as outbreaks of cholera and Lassa fever continue to spread across multiple regions in 2026.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed increased reports of Lassa fever cases, especially in rural and high-risk communities. The virus, which is spread mainly through contact with infected rodents, has prompted health officials to warn citizens about proper food storage, cleanliness, and early hospital visits when symptoms appear.
At the same time, cholera outbreaks have been reported in several states, largely linked to unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation conditions. Health experts say the situation highlights ongoing challenges in access to clean water and proper hygiene infrastructure in some parts of the country.
Medical teams and emergency response units have been deployed to affected areas, with treatment centers being strengthened to manage new cases. Public health campaigns are also ongoing to educate communities about prevention methods, including handwashing, boiling water before drinking, and avoiding contaminated food.
