Liverpool snatched a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park after Dominik Szoboszlai converted a stoppage-time penalty with almost the final kick of the match.
Newcastle took an early lead through Anthony Elanga, who calmly finished after being set up by William Osula for his first goal for the club.
Liverpool fought back after the break as Cody Gakpo struck from distance to bring the visitors level. However, Newcastle restored their advantage just two minutes later when substitute Joe Willock found space and fired into the bottom corner.
The Magpies looked set to secure a memorable victory, but a late foul by Lewis Hall on Victor Munoz inside the box gave Liverpool a lifeline.
Szoboszlai stepped up under intense pressure and powered his penalty into the roof of the net to earn Liverpool a share of the points.
The match was also an emotional occasion as fans paid tribute to Newcastle legend Kevin Keegan, who died last month at the age of 75. Supporters unveiled a “King Kev” display before kick-off, with tributes also shown around the stadium.
Newcastle came close to a dream start to the season, but Liverpool’s late fightback ensured the entertaining encounter ended 2-2.
