Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 with a convincing 2-0 victory over Algeria in Vancouver, earning their first World Cup knockout-stage win since 1938.
Breel Embolo opened the scoring early before Dan Ndoye added a second after the break to secure the result. Although Algeria controlled more of the ball with 55 percent possession, Switzerland made their chances count, with Granit Xhaka dictating play in midfield and teenage winger Johan Manzambi impressing in attack.

Algeria, inspired by Riyad Mahrez, searched for a way back into the contest but were unable to beat goalkeeper Yann Sommer and the disciplined Swiss defence. Their tournament comes to an end after reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since 2014.
Having finished top of Group B without losing a match, Switzerland will now face either Colombia or Ghana in the Round of 16 as they continue their bid for a place in the quarter-finals.
