Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has declared that he would leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Tinubu ever disrespects the Catholic bishops or undermines the opposition.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television's Politics Today on Wednesday, Kalu rejected claims that President Tinubu had insulted the Catholic Church amid recent debates over comments made by Catholic leaders on the state of the nation.
According to Kalu, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has always played the role of a moral voice, offering guidance and constructive criticism to governments regardless of who is in power.
He stressed that President Tinubu maintains a respectful relationship with the Catholic Church and has consistently granted audiences to its leaders whenever requested.
Kalu noted that criticism from the bishops should not be viewed as hostility but as part of their responsibility to speak on national issues.
He further stated that if the President ever failed to respect either the Catholic bishops or the opposition, he would immediately resign from the APC.
The senator also expressed confidence in Tinubu's administration, saying the government has recorded notable achievements in infrastructure, security, and economic reforms, although he believes those successes have not been effectively communicated to Nigerians.
Kalu rated the President's performance at about 65 percent, predicting it could rise to 70 percent by September or October. He also maintained that the opposition remains too divided to present a serious challenge to the APC in the 2027 general election.
