Obi urges FG to secure terror-hit communities, restore confidence
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the Federal Government to step up efforts to protect communities affected by terrorism and create conditions for displaced Nigerians to safely return to their ancestral homes.
Obi made the appeal on Tuesday in a statement shared on his X account after visiting an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The visit came after Obi said his delegation was stopped from reaching Yelwata in Benue State, where they had planned to meet displaced residents and families affected by recent attacks.
Describing the situation in Mangu as disturbing, Obi said more than 45,000 people had been displaced, while over 20 communities were reportedly sacked by terrorists. He added that the IDP camp he visited was accommodating more than 500 displaced people.
According to him, many of those affected simply want to return home, rebuild their communities, farm their land and live peacefully.
Obi urged the government to intensify security operations in affected areas and restore citizens’ confidence in the state’s ability to protect lives and property.
He also stressed that displaced Nigerians must not be abandoned, noting that insecurity had disrupted their homes, livelihoods and futures.
The former Anambra State governor called for concrete measures to secure affected communities, facilitate the safe return of displaced persons and provide support for rebuilding their lives.
He said he ended the visit by offering modest assistance to some displaced families as a gesture of solidarity.
Obi reiterated his vision of a “New Nigeria” where citizens can live, work, farm, raise families and pursue their ambitions in peace and security.
“A New Nigeria is POssible,” he said.
