The French Football Federation confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, with Zidane succeeding Didier Deschamps, who stepped down after leading France to a fourth-place finish at the recent FIFA World Cup.
Deschamps managed France from 2012, guiding the team to World Cup victory in 2018 and another final appearance in 2022.
Speaking after his unveiling in Paris, Zidane said coaching France was the only job he had been waiting for, revealing that he had turned down several club offers over the past few years.
Widely regarded as one of football's greatest figures, Zidane enjoyed a legendary playing career, helping France win the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000. As manager of Real Madrid, he made history by leading the club to three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018.
