SUNU Health urges providers to improve quality care, faster emergency response

SUNU Health Nigeria Limited has called on healthcare providers and partners across the country to strengthen the delivery of quality, accessible healthcare services, stressing that patients must remain the focus of every decision.

The appeal was made by the company's Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Faith Nwachi, during SUNU Health's second-quarter 2026 Providers Forum held in Yaba, Lagos. The forum focused on improving healthcare quality and expanding access through stronger collaboration among providers.

Nwachi said quality healthcare goes beyond meeting regulatory requirements, describing a well-coordinated provider network as essential to ensuring patients receive appropriate treatment promptly, affordably, and at the right healthcare facility.

She noted that achieving universal health coverage requires closer collaboration among health maintenance organisations, hospitals, regulators, technology partners, and patients, adding that both financial and physical access to healthcare remain critical.

Also speaking at the event, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Coordinator for Ikeja, Dr. Bertua-Kasimo Abraham, expressed concern over delays in treatment caused by slow authorisation processes. He said the NHIA has introduced a one-hour approval policy for treatment authorisation following repeated complaints from enrollees and warned that providers who fail to comply could face sanctions.

Abraham emphasised that hospitals should prioritise emergency treatment instead of waiting for HMO authorisation codes, warning that delays could endanger patients' lives.

On the issue of medicine shortages, he disclosed that the NHIA is developing measures to monitor hospital drug inventories and may sanction facilities that fail to maintain adequate stock levels.

He also encouraged health insurance enrollees to report poor service through official complaint channels, saying timely feedback helps regulators identify problems, hold erring providers accountable, and improve healthcare delivery.

Closing the forum, Nwachi reaffirmed SUNU Health's commitment to translating discussions into practical actions that will enhance patient experience, strengthen partnerships with healthcare providers, and expand access to quality healthcare services across Nigeria.
