The Anambra State Government has inaugurated an eight-member committee to review the operations of the Anambra State Transport Company (TRACAS), in a move aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and the long-term sustainability of the state-owned transport service. Speaking during the inauguration on July 16, the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Edward Obiefuna Ibuzo, said the committee was established to conduct a comprehensive assessment of TRACAS and recommend practical reforms that will reposition the organisation for better performance. According to the commissioner, the review became necessary following concerns that the company’s revenue generation and operational performance have not kept pace with Anambra State’s economic growth and increasing transportation demands under the administration of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo. Ibuzo tasked the committee, chaired by Chief Michael Chukwudeme, with examining the operational, financial, and administrative challenges facing TRACAS. He said the team is expected to evaluate the company’s revenue profile and propose measures that will enhance efficiency, accountability, service delivery, and institutional transparency. The committee will also assess TRACAS’ legal and corporate governance framework, management structure, workforce, financial records, vehicle fleet, transport operations, courier services, and other commercial activities. As part of its assignment, members will inspect TRACAS parks and operational facilities across the state, verify relevant documents, engage management and staff, and identify challenges affecting the company’s operations, while ensuring that all findings are evidence-based. Based on its findings, the committee is expected to recommend reforms, including possible restructuring, Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements, franchising options, and other sustainable strategies to strengthen TRACAS’ competitiveness and long-term viability. The commissioner directed the committee to submit weekly progress reports throughout the exercise to keep Governor Soludo informed and enable prompt government action on the recommendations. The committee has been given three weeks to complete its assignment, with the possibility of an extension if necessary. Ibuzo assured members of the Ministry’s full support and urged the management of TRACAS to cooperate fully with the review process, expressing confidence that the exercise would pave the way for a more efficient and customer-focused transport system in Anambra State.
