The programme, powered by the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA), is also geared towards ensuring that every citizen and resident of the state knows their HIV status and ending the stigmatisation of people living with HIV, and it featured the inauguration of 42 local government coordinators, as well as the symbolic signing of the Zero New HIV Infection by 2030 Commitment Charter. Addressing the gathering in Awka, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, said there is a common relationship between the Nonye Soludo Healthy Living Initiative and the Healthy Living HIV Control Initiative, as both focus on nutrition, reproductive health, and physical activities to ensure sound health for all, pointing out that the initiative promotes community partnerships so that HIV control messages can reach every doorstep in order to achieve zero new infections by 2030. The Governor's wife, who spoke through the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, announced that about 11,413 persons living with HIV have been enrolled in the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme, where they are accessing free healthcare through the Global Fund, and commended ANSACA for its efforts in taking awareness campaigns to the grassroots through moonlight testing, stating that everyone needs to know their status while encouraging the newly inaugurated local government coordinators to carry out their duties diligently and never disclose patients' statuses, as doing so is against professional ethics. Using a power cable illustration, the Executive Director and Programme Manager of the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA), Dr Nkem Okeke, said they integrated the initiative into the Nonye Soludo Healthy Living Programme because many people are already familiar with it, noting that being part of the programme will help take the Healthy Living HIV Control Initiative to local communities where there is a need to educate the masses on how to maintain zero new infections and ensure that those affected can access healthcare without being stigmatised or isolated, adding that the initiative also seeks to address ways of preventing the disease. Dr Okeke outlined the agency's pillars to include community health education and awareness campaigns, free HIV testing and counselling, distribution of prevention commodities, empowerment and inclusion of people living with HIV, and prevention of mother-to-child transmission through community engagement. On his part, the traditional ruler of Umueri, Igwe Ben Emeka, commended ANSACA for the bold steps taken in bringing the message to local government areas, noting that many people are ignorant of the disease and that fear among infected persons often prevents them from accessing treatment, but expressed confidence that the campaign would help those who test positive to manage the illness and live normal lives. In their goodwill messages, the World Health Organisation (WHO) representative in Anambra, Dr Uju Orjiagu, and her Achieving Healthy Nigeria Initiative (AHNi) counterpart, Dr Udochi Prosper-Njoku, maintained that adopting a healthy lifestyle, which includes eating a balanced diet, proper nutrition, regular exercise, and abstinence, can drastically reduce HIV infections, stating that they will continue to partner with ANSACA to ensure adequate public awareness that HIV can be prevented, that affected persons can access healthcare, and that stigmatisation will become a thing of the past.
