The new Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Oji Ama, has assumed duty with a pledge to deploy intelligence-led and proactive policing to strengthen security and protect lives and property across the state.
CP Ama took over the leadership of the Anambra State Police Command following the retirement of his predecessor, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, after his promotion.
He was formally received at the Command Headquarters, Amawbia, with a Quarter Guard parade by senior officers before proceeding to his maiden press briefing with journalists.
The new Commissioner said his administration would prioritise intelligence gathering, community engagement and strategic collaboration with other security agencies to prevent crime and ensure that criminals have no hiding place in Anambra.
He also declared a zero-tolerance policy for extortion by police officers, saying the directive had been communicated to all formations and checkpoints across the state.
CP Ama urged Ndi Anambra and residents to strengthen their partnership with the police, stressing that effective policing requires the cooperation of the public and other security agencies.
He commended Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for his continued support for the police and other security agencies, describing such cooperation as essential to sustaining peace and security in the state.
On whether members of the public could record police officers while on duty, CP Ama said citizens could do so where officers were acting outside the law, noting that such recordings could provide useful evidence.
However, he cautioned against recording officers maliciously, mockingly or with the intention of provoking them.
CP Ama, a Psychology graduate of the University of Jos, previously served as Area Commander in Nnewi and held various intelligence positions within the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Unit.
