Okoronkwo Returns from Injury Ahead of WAFCON
Super Falcons midfielder Esther Okoronkwo has returned to competitive action for AFC Toronto, providing a timely fitness boost for Nigeria ahead of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The 29-year-old made her comeback on Sunday, playing the final 25 minutes of AFC Toronto's 3-1 victory over Vancouver Rise after spending nearly two months on the sidelines with a meniscus injury sustained earlier in the season.
During her absence, the Canadian club struggled for consistency, recording one win, two draws and two defeats in five league matches.
Okoronkwo also missed Nigeria's recent international friendlies against Senegal, where the Super Falcons secured victories across both matches.
Her return gives head coach Justine Madugu another experienced option as he prepares to name his final squad for the continental championship.
Okoronkwo played a key role in Nigeria's successful campaign at the previous WAFCON, contributing goals and assists as the Super Falcons lifted a record-extending 10th African title.
Nigeria have been drawn in Group C for the 2026 tournament alongside Malawi, Zambia and Egypt. The Super Falcons will begin their campaign against Malawi before facing the other group opponents in their quest for another continental crown.
The competition, scheduled for July 25 to August 16 in Morocco, will also determine Africa's representatives at the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, with the four semi-finalists earning automatic qualification.
