Tunisia Sack Lamouchi After Just One World Cup Match, Appoint Herve Renard
Tunisia have dismissed head coach Sabri Lamouchi following their crushing 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Tunisian Football Federation confirmed on Monday that Herve Renard has been appointed as the new national team coach until the end of the tournament.
The decision makes Lamouchi the first coach in World Cup history to be sacked after just one match. The 54-year-old, who was appointed in January, managed only one win in five games—a 1-0 victory over Haiti.
Renard, one of international football's most experienced coaches, famously led Saudi Arabia to a stunning victory over eventual champions Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and most recently managed the France women's national team.
“The president of the Tunisian Football Federation, Moez Nassari, announced that an official agreement had been reached with French coach Herve Renard to take charge of the national team until the end of the 2026 World Cup,” the federation said via national broadcaster.
Tunisia now face an uphill battle to reach the knockout stages after their opening defeat. They will take on Japan in their next Group F fixture on Saturday before facing the Netherlands in their final group match.
