World Cup: Mbappe shines as France, Norway and Mexico book last-16 places
France, Norway and Mexico secured places in the FIFA World Cup last 16 on Tuesday, with Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland delivering decisive performances for their respective countries.
Mbappe scored twice as France defeated Sweden 3-0 at MetLife Stadium, taking his tournament tally to six goals and moving level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. Bradley Barcola also found the net as France advanced to a last-16 clash with Paraguay.
The French captain's latest brace also lifted his career World Cup tally to 18 goals, leaving him one short of Messi's record. Mbappe credited the team's collective focus, saying the squad understands what is required to challenge for the title.
Norway also progressed after edging Ivory Coast 2-1 in Arlington, Texas. Antonio Nusa opened the scoring before Amad Diallo restored parity for the Ivorians. Haaland struck the decisive goal late in the match, sending Norway into a last-16 meeting with Brazil.
The victory marked Norway's first-ever win in the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup. Head coach Ståle Solbakken praised Haaland's clinical finishing, describing him as one of the game's most prolific goalscorers.
Co-hosts Mexico completed the day's action with a 2-0 victory over Ecuador at the Estadio Azteca. Julián Quiñones opened the scoring before Raúl Jiménez doubled the advantage, helping El Tri maintain their unbeaten World Cup record at the iconic venue.
The result sends Mexico into the last 16, where they will face the winner of the match between DR Congo and England.
Away from the pitch, Ronald Koeman announced his resignation as Netherlands head coach following the team's penalty shootout defeat to Morocco, saying he accepted responsibility for the country's World Cup exit.
