Turkish champions Galatasaray are reportedly preparing a major bid to keep Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen at the club by offering him the iconic No. 9 jersey and the possibility of becoming team captain ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Osimhen has worn the No. 45 shirt since joining the Istanbul club from Napoli, with the No. 9 jersey occupied by Argentine forward Mauro Icardi. However, with Icardi expected to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June, the shirt is set to become available. Galatasaray officials are said to be keen on handing the prestigious number directly to the Super Eagles star as a symbol of his status as the club’s leading figure and long-term focal point. The move forms part of a broader strategy to ward off growing interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Osimhen has been linked with several elite sides, including Manchester United, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea. Reports indicate that Manchester United manager Michael Carrick views Osimhen as a priority target as the club seeks a prolific striker ahead of its return to the UEFA Champions League. Galatasaray signed Osimhen permanently from Napoli in a Turkish transfer-record deal worth €75 million and are believed to value the striker between €130 million and €150 million. The club has so far resisted approaches from interested European sides. In addition to the No. 9 shirt, Galatasaray are also considering handing Osimhen the captain’s armband following Icardi’s departure. Club officials reportedly regard the Nigerian international as one of the most influential figures in the dressing room and believe the leadership role could strengthen his commitment to the club. Turkish football analyst Ali Naci Kucuk previously revealed that Galatasaray see the captaincy as an attractive proposition, particularly because such a role may not be immediately available to Osimhen at clubs with established leadership structures. The combined offer of the captaincy and the No. 9 shirt represents Galatasaray’s strongest effort yet to build an emotional and symbolic connection between the striker and the club’s future. Osimhen enjoyed another impressive campaign, scoring 15 league goals and providing five assists in 22 appearances. He also registered seven goals and three assists in 10 UEFA Champions League matches before Galatasaray’s elimination by Liverpool in the round of 16. His performances have played a crucial role in helping Galatasaray secure consecutive Turkish Süper Lig titles and cement his status as one of the most influential players in the club’s recent history.
