West Ham United have entered the race to sign Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu, joining Fulham and Bayer Leverkusen in the pursuit of the highly rated Trabzonspor centre-back.
The 22-year-old has attracted growing interest following an impressive spell in Turkey after joining Trabzonspor from Austrian side Wolfsberger AC in January. He quickly became a regular in the team's defence and played a key role in their successful Turkish Cup campaign.
Fulham are understood to have made an approach for the defender, but Trabzonspor rejected the offer. Reports suggest the Turkish club value Nwaiwu highly and are seeking a transfer fee that could surpass the league's previous record for an outgoing player.
West Ham are looking to strengthen their defensive options as they prepare for the new Championship season following relegation from the Premier League. The club are seeking experienced and dependable reinforcements after changes to their backline, with promotion back to the top flight their primary objective.
Nwaiwu's commanding aerial ability, calmness in possession and defensive awareness have earned him recognition as one of the most promising young centre-backs currently available. His experience in both the Austrian Bundesliga and Turkish Super Lig is also viewed as an asset that could ease his transition to another European league.
With Fulham, Bayer Leverkusen and now West Ham all monitoring the Nigerian international, competition for his signature is expected to intensify as the summer transfer window progresses.
